5 Things I love about owning my own business

#1  Freedom

To be clear, this is really about freedom of choice, not freedom from responsibility. Sometimes people confuse the two. If anything the more choice you exercise, and the more responsibility you take, and the more you hold yourself accountable, then the more ownership you have in creating your own life. For me at least, that is true freedom. When you are the boss, you are first and foremost accountable to yourself. You get to decide what you will do, how you will do it and when you will do it.  Of course you have to be aware of your context, and aware of the demands and needs of your business, but ultimately the buck really does stop with you.

#2 Personal growth

I am constantly learning and always looking for new insights, a different perspective, and more tools to help better myself, my team and my business.  Every person brings their own strengths and weaknesses to the role of business owner. It is a wonderful crucible for revealing your every weakness and smoothing out the rough edges in your personality, if you are open to growing yourself as a person. Please hear that I am not saying this is easy, or that I have removed all my rough edges. It is not easy, and I have not, but I am constantly being challenged every day to be a better person, and a better boss, leader and visionary.

#3 Meaningful relationships

At the core of every business are the relationships that hold it together, elevate its purpose and create value. While this is true with every business, in fact with everything in life, there is a subtle difference when you are the one who is ultimately responsible for building those relationships. There are relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and collaborators which all need to be cultivated and supported.  Every business has stakeholders and the quality of those relationships can make or break a business. Trust, validation, and clear communication are all needed in the work of relationship, and the leader’s role in building and sustaining these relationships is central.

#4 Creating opportunities for others

I think this is one of the best parts of ownership. I believe people should enjoy what they do and find some level of fulfillment from it. I try to create a business where you can do fun & fulfilling work, in a supportive environment with a culture of caring. Not everyone wants to be a dog walker for the rest of their life, but the work can be fun and rewarding while you are doing it. Matching people to work that energizes and supports them feels good, no matter what the business is and what work is being done. Creating a culture of caring and support, where personal and professional growth is possible is an important part of a successful business.

#5 Ever expanding possibility

While it is true that every business faces limits, these are often more perceived limits than actual limits. Of course in the moment there are reality based limits on resources like money, energy and time, but I believe that limits are fluid over time. Being the visionary of your business means looking for where the limits can be pushed to create opportunity.  Being the visionary of a business is all about seeking and exploring possibilities. It is as much about mindset as anything. When it is your task to guide, nurture and support your team the results can be invigorating and inspiring.  Growth is a process, with ebbs and flows, with rests and races. We all, from time to time, want to pause, lean back, look around and enjoy where we are, but eventually a visionary is looking to the horizon to see what is next and to see what is possible. They are always looking for new possibilities.
